Halloween @ St. Mary's

A Scary Halloween Lab 4 at St. Marys
Reflection:
It was a great Halloween day at St. Mary's. I dressed up as a ninja and the kids liked it, they all wanted to play with me and have my attention. We started out observing the two students for catching and throwing and both did better than I expected. By the time we were done with that my group, the Pre-K, were outside in the playground, We played a great game of freeze tag and just running having a good time. I wasn't able to do my activity  because we were short on time. They had snack and afterward did Nicole's activity in coloring in a plate that was shaped like a pumpkin and they also colored. I was a little annoyed because we didn't have time to do my activity, this week's lab when by so quick we didn't have time to do our activities in the gym with the Pre-K but it was still a good time. We ended with a  great tag game, a very creative song, and a halloween cheer. I think I did a better this week, I projected my voice when I was outside and had everyone's attention when playing tag outside.

SUPER day at St. Mary's. (LAB 3)

It was superhero theme today at St.Mary's.

Reflection:
I felt like today was going to be a great day at St. Mary's. All in all, it was pretty amazing, I dressed up as a superhero and the kids responded to that in a positive way. Teaching in the gym wasn't as what I thought it would be today, I felt like me and my group didn't have a lot of control, they were running all over the place, but that is good because they have all the energy and this is what they needed to release it. But when we were trying to get their attention they didn't want much of it. I think we were successful in completing the task we had but it was hard. Other than the gym, going outside and in the cafeteria was fun, we played kickball outside and they really got into it, as for the cafeteria they ate their snack and then played a few games of seven up. When we played in the gym again we played games like football and baseball and I realized how I stink at jump roping and hula hooping. I think what I have learned from this day is to find other ways of getting the children's attention maybe a whistle and also practice to talk LOUD so the whole gym can hear me.

The HEATED Debate

The Great Debate was basically a three day debate against three groups fighting on what they believed was better to implement into the curriculum for their students. My group was called the fitness finatics and we believed in life time activities. While the other two groups were for and against implementing long stick use in physical education.

Day One: Each group started with their opening statements, then afterwards each presenting via powerpoint, video, demonstration, or lecture arguing why ours would work out better.

Day Two: The second day was the rebuttal stage where we all would rebut each others presentation and argue what we thought the mistakes or errors they stated. Then afterwards, we questioned each others groups and this is where I believed the Great Debate turned into the HEATED Debate because it was basically a free for all, we were all questioning eachother and trying to back up what we as a group believed in and what was right, that process took a long period of time. That's how day two ended, the board couldn't decide on a short period of time and we had to move to a day three.

Day Three: This was a short day, where we all awaited The Boards decision. All in all, when they made their decision, they ended up choosing all three groups because all three groups had made great points and backed up their curriculum they were trying to pass.

This debate was a good practice tool for the real world because there will be times that us as P.E teachers are going to have to defend on what we believe in and what's better than practicing NOW!

St. Mary School: Take two

Reflection:
It was the second day at St. Mary’s and I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, like I knew what I had to do when it came to observing and teaching my game, but when it came to special projections I didn’t know what I was in for. In my group Nicole did the camera and Dan was interviewing people for a newsletter. I was the one that had to create a better more creative graph for a club they have called Minute Club, which I think is a club that keeps track of the fourth, fifth and sixth graders who finishing changing in the locker rooms in less than a minute and whoever has the most at the end of each month get a prize.
When it came time to teaching and putting my game into action I have to admit I was nervous or what others would call having butterflies. But I got through it and I probably could have done things better but I was happy with the results for the first time. I know for a fact that if I continue with improvements each week at St.Mary’s my learning and teaching abilities will only get better and better.

First Day at St.Mary's!!!

Reflection:
Going in I truly didnt know what to expect. But after visiting all the stations from outside, gym, Pre-K, cafeteria. I realize that it wasn't bad at all. I had a lot of fun playing with the kids and getting to know some. I played soccer, with a few of them and I realized that they don't like when we go easy on them and they knew it and got upset, so I started to play a little harder and lets just say they taught me a few things about soccer haha. They really have a fantastic imagination from playing outside on the playground and staying out of the lava from playing doll house, it was totally a great experience and it definitely put a smile on their face as well my mine as you can tell by the picture(I am the one on the left with the red shirt on). I wish Mr.Yang had a better picture of me ha. When you play around and have fun with them you forget that you are a college student you feel like you are one of them. They bring out the inner child in you. I am looking forward to continue my volunteer work with the children at St.Mary's.

HALL OF SHAME!!!!!

See to me I don't mind games like duck duck goose and dodge ball, they are fun recreational games. But are they good for physical education classes? Well it depends, if there was an alternate to the game. Because games like these dont require a lot of movement and interaction, unless you were really into it.
Now the games I saw in the books weren't that bad, lots of people dislike the game tag but I think its a good physical activity game gets you running and there are so many alternatives to the game of tag. A game like dodge ball you can have an alternative where everyone is moving around. You can have many balls(preferably soft) to dodge in the game so everyone is running around and getting their dynamic exercise. When in jail have the jailmate doing jumping jacks or some other static exercise so they are still moving.
In P.E classes I see a lot of standing around and not getting a lot of exercising or physical activities in in a short period of time. So doing drills and preparing for whatever you are about to play is a good way to get everyone involved.

Sporting Equipment(long handle ones) + kids = Bad News

Whether its a hockey stick, baseball bat, lacrosse stick whatever........ young children all they want to do is have fun and sometimes not think. The way the brain develops when young, children brains aren't fully developed. When they have something in there hands they either just swing it or might put it in their mouth. Holding a type of sporting equipment could also lead to danger because them not having the maturity level of an older child. They can actually hurt them or someone else. I know when I was younger I used to play sword fights with baseball bats and lets just say it didnt end well. But in Physical Education classes as long as the teachers have control of their students and say if you do something wrong or misuse the equipment then they would get punished with either a timeout or a trip to the principal's office. But if you dont have control of your children then you might be out of a job because if you can't control them and a lot of them get hurt under your watchful eye, then the school will know you are not cut out for the job and cut you loose.
